Two New Operators Receive Licenses in Ontario as the AGCO Launches iGaming

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario has recently announced its intention to begin accepting iGaming operators on April 4, 2022, as part of a broader initiative to loosen gambling restrictions in the province and capitalize on the largely underserved market for online gambling in Ontario.

As part of this opening, the AGCO has issued licenses to two operators, PointsBet and theScore Bet, who are also preparing to enter the Canadian market this year.

PointsBet Canada

PointsBet is a U.S.-based online sportsbook with an emphasis on providing a streamlined online sports wagering platform for major American leagues such as the NFL, NBA, and MLB. Their desktop and mobile betting software has helped them acquire popularity in the US and Australian markets, and their operating license from the AGCO is a crucial step in their expansion into the Canadian market.

Scott Vanderwel, CEO of PointsBet Canada, states, “Since day one, we have remained true to our promise of building a Canadian sportsbook with Canadian employees for the Canadian market.” “Today’s approval of PointsBet Canada as a licensed sportsbook in Ontario, effective April 4, 2022, is a monumental step in introducing the province to our authentically Canadian gaming experience.”

“We are proud to be one of the first iGaming operators regulated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario,” stated Chantal Cipriano, vice president of legal, compliance, and people at PointsBet Canada. It demonstrates the confidence regulators have in our ability to provide consumers in Ontario with an innovative, safe, and responsible experience. We look forward to employing our expertise from Australia and the United States to help build a trustworthy, competitive, and regulated gaming market in Ontario, thereby laying a crucial foundation for our country.”

The Score Wager

In the domain of casino operators, TheScore Bet has been granted the first operating license by the AGCO. TheScore Bet is an online wagering operator that focuses primarily on the North American market.

TheScore Bet was recently absorbed by Penn National Gaming following a 2021 merger with Barstool Sports. Penn National is an American online gambling company with over 44 locations in the United States offering a variety of wagering channels, such as online casinos and sports betting.

As a consequence of the merger, TheScore Bet is now a part of Penn National’s entry into the Canadian market, made possible by the AGCO’s issuance of an operating license. As the site’s official launch on April 4 approaches, TheScore Bet still has additional regulatory and operational issues to resolve.

John Levy, chief executive officer of theScore, said of the license, “We are thrilled to be one of the first operators to receive an internet gaming operator certificate of registration from the AGCO as we prepare for Ontario’s new regulated market.” We have been and will continue to be at the vanguard of the introduction of regulated internet gaming in Ontario, and we are beyond thrilled to bring TheScore Bet to our home market on April 4. The countdown to launch has finally begun.”
